In 2001, she was the Fulbright Senior Research Scholar in the Philippines where she explored the stories of Surviving Filipina Comfort Women of World War II for her collection of essays, LOLAS’ HOUSE: WOMEN LIVING WITH WAR. Galang teaches in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the University of Miami.

Lola Priscilla Bartonico, 1926-2006
For over fifty years, she kept her history a secret from her husband and children. She couldn't sleep after the war. Every night, while the rest of the house slept, she rose and painted beautiful murals, using tissue, cardboard and children's tempra paints.
She made beautiful dreamscapes, images of saints and self-portraits where she was worry-free. She didn't want to close her eyes, she told me. She didn't want to dream.
